The Equality and Anti-discrimination Ombud

The Equality and Anti-discrimination Ombud is a public agency established 1 January 2006. The Ombud's duties are to promote equality and combat discrimination on the basis of gender, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, disability and age.

The Ombud upholds the law and promotes equality in all areas of society by:

  • making determinations with regard to complaints and providing information concerning legal rights and responsibilities 
  •  surveying general trends and identifying and publicizing conditions in contravention with equal opportunity and non-discrimination
  • providing information, support, and guidance to public, private, and not-for-profit agencies in order to influence attitudes and behaviour
  • providing employers with information and guidance regarding matters of affirmative action
  • developing a greater understanding of the mechanisms behind inequality and discrimination through documentation and monitoring
  • serving as a forum and an information centre for the public at large, as well as a focal point for co-operation between organisations and services that also seek to promote equality and combat discrimination


National reference group

Reference groups are established in each partner country and involves as a priority the relevant social partner organisations, gender experts, innovators and other key stakeholders such as labour market authorities (also leaders and boards) and gender equality bodies.
